What Are Your Perfumes Actually Made Of?
Do you know why some fragrances last longer on your skin than others? It depends on the composition and the amount of perfume oil essence in the fragrance. The higher the percentage of perfume oils the longer the perfume lasts and the less you therefore need to apply.
The most high strength fragrance is . . .
Perfume (often called Parfum), this is made of between 15% and 30% concentration of perfume essence and the remainder is alcohol. Denatured alcohol is normally used for safety reasons, so it can’t be drunk. Perfume will typically last for up to 6 hours depending on your skin type.
Perfume is more expensive, it can cost over £100 for just a 15ml bottle, so some people simply can’t afford to buy it.
Next in order of potency is Eau de Parfum (EDP), this is lighter than perfume and has between 8% and 16% concentration of perfume oil, a similar amount of alcohol to Parfum but the remainder of the composition is water (which is why it is called Eau). Typically, it will last about 3 to 5 hours. With more water and even less perfume oil is Eau De Toilette (EDT), it only normally has 4% to 8% concentration of essence and lasts around 2 to 4 hours.
